Laramie County operates two separate and distinct treatment court programs: the Laramie County Adult Drug Court program and the Laramie County DUI Court program. During my Law Enforcement career, I had the opportunity to work closely with the Drug Court Program, conducting home visits with individuals, ensuring they followed the court-mandated guidelines, and giving them moral support. Both programs allow people with substance abuse disorders a second chance to regain their lives and break the destructive cycle of addiction.
Drug Court is a treatment-focused program that offers intensive rehabilitation services to high-risk and high-need criminal defendants identified by treatment court professionals as having a substance dependency diagnosis. The court creates an environment with clear, certain, and definite rules that are easy to understand based on the participant’s performance and measurable results. Compliance is wholly within the individual’s control.
Under the dedicated leadership of treatment Court Director Fernando Muzquiz, the programs have achieved a remarkable success rate. Seven out of 10 individuals who complete the program never get rearrested for any criminal offense. This statistic is a beacon of hope, demonstrating that recovery and a crime-free life are not just possible but achievable. The Laramie County Treatment Court program is a testament to the power of second chances and community support.
