A Sweet Slice of the Laramie County Fair

Some of the best moments at the county fair happen away from the grandstand. They happen around a table, with neighbors visiting, families cheering one another on and volunteers making sure everyone feels welcome.

The pie contest was one of those moments. There were 30 entries—11 from junior bakers and 19 from adults—and all eight judges sampled every pie, even a watermelon pie.

Judging 30 pies takes concentration, careful pacing and a willingness to keep going when common sense suggests you may have already had enough dessert. It was a tough assignment, but somehow, we managed.

What stood out most was the community surrounding the contest. Junior bakers stepped forward to share their talents, adults continued a favorite fair tradition, and plenty of people stayed to watch and support the contestants.

The Fair Ambassadors were also on hand to present the awards, while Fair staff and volunteers kept everything moving.

Those contributions matter. The ribbons may receive the attention, but events like this only happen because people are willing to enter, volunteer, organize and show up to support one another.

The blue-ribbon champion of the evening was a Key lime pie that was every bit as scrumptious as it looked. Still, everyone who entered deserves a tip of the hat for sharing their time and talents with the community.

That is what makes the Laramie County Fair special. It brings people of all ages together to celebrate hard work, friendly competition and community spirit—sometimes one slice of pie at a time.
