On July 22nd, I attended the commencement ceremony for a gentleman who completed the Laramie County DUI Court Program.
The program allows qualified individuals with DUI convictions the opportunity to participate in a court-sanctioned treatment program.
The gentleman who graduated that day had a remarkable journey in the Laramie County DUI Court Program. He achieved a total of 382 days sober, with over 500 days in the program. Despite a setback, which is a common experience, he received unwavering support from the program staff and the DUI Court Judge. This support, coupled with his determination, led to his success in making positive changes in his life and reconnecting with his adult children.
The DUI Court, as well as the Drug Court, are great examples of community resources being put to good use. Assisting people to once again become contributing members of our community.
The programs are strict but they also recognize the ever-present possibility of a relapse. However, they also emphasize that as long as the person continues to make progress, even in the face of setbacks, they can and do succeed. This message of hope is at the core of our programs.
I applaud this man for his efforts. He knows full well that his will be a lifelong struggle to maintain his sobriety. Still, with support and determination, he can succeed.
I eagerly look forward to the next graduation. The sight of individuals, who have overcome significant challenges, filled with self-pride always brings a smile to my face and warms my heart. I encourage all of you to join me in celebrating their achievements.
