Data Centers in Laramie County

Data centers remain an important topic in Laramie County, and residents deserve accurate information about both the opportunities and the impacts.
According to information shared by Cheyenne LEADS, where I serve as a board member through my position as a County Commissioner, there are currently 10 data centers operating in Cheyenne and Laramie County, 5 under construction, and 9 additional projects announced.
Two of the biggest questions I hear are about electricity and water. Large electric users must follow utility tariffs and rate structures that ensure they pay for the infrastructure and services their projects require, rather than shifting those costs to residential ratepayers. On water, newer data center models proposed for our area use closed-loop cooling systems that recirculate water to reduce water consumption.
These projects can bring significant investment, jobs, tax base, and support for local businesses, but growth must be managed responsibly. When necessary or appropriate, the County can place conditions on project site plans to help reduce impacts on nearby residents and the broader community.
Responsible growth means welcoming economic opportunity while making sure companies follow the rules, pay for their impacts, and do what they tell the public and the County they will do.
